2019 High School Literary Arts Awards & Scholarship Competition

Submission Guidelines

CALENDAR OF IMPORTANT AWARD DATES:

Submission Period: December 19, 2018 – February 8, 2019
Winning Teachers Notified by E-mail: March 15, 2019
Winners’ List Posted: March 22, 2019
HSLAA Awards Ceremony: April 10, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery

We hope you will make plans to be with us to receive your awards on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. The annual ceremony is a special day for the literary arts in Alabama and provides a chance for students, parents, and teachers to spend time with elected officials and arts supporters.

ELIGIBILITY

The Literary Arts Awards, including the Literary Magazine Competition, are open to Alabama high school students in grades 9 – 12 and scholarships are available only to seniors in Alabama high schools.

JUDGING

The names of the judges will be announced when the awards announcement is made.

FORMAT FOR CREATIVE NONFICTION, FICTION, AND POETRY ENTRIES

Creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry must be submitted online. Complete online submission form and attach files in a PDF format. Students’ names should appear only on the entry forms since all works are judged anonymously. Students must designate on the entry form the category for which they wish the work to be considered.

Poetry: Students may enter three poems. Poetry entries may be single-spaced or double-spaced.

Creative Nonfiction: One creative nonfiction entry per student. Entries must be typed and double-spaced.

Fiction: One creative nonfiction entry per student. Entries must be typed and double-spaced.

FORMAT FOR SENIOR PORTFOLIOS

The scholarship awards in literary arts are open to seniors in Alabama high schools. Six cash awards of $500 each are given. Portfolios placed in consideration for the scholarship awards in literary arts will be judged anonymously. Awards are based solely on merit of works submitted.

Portfolios should consist of 20-50 pages of work from at least two categories required. All entries should be typed and double-spaced, one side only. Poetry may be single-spaced. No illustrations. Entries must include a title page that lists all titles and their respective categories. Do not put the student’s name or school on the portfolio or title page.

CATEGORIES FOR PORTFOLIO WORK

Chapter(s) from a novel accompanied by a one-page synopsis of the novel (25-page total limit)
Creative Nonfiction (one or more essays; 15-page total limit)
Drama (25-page total limit)
Poetry (three shorter poems or longer works totaling no more than 10 pages)
Scholarly essay or research paper with a creative focus (10-page total limit)
Short Fiction (one or more stories; 25-page total limit)

FORMAT FOR LITERARY MAGAZINES

To enter, send one copy each of two issues of the magazine published between 2016-2018 with the required entry form. Magazines must have been published for at least two consecutive years to be eligible to enter and must consist solely of original student work. List the name of editor on the entry form, followed by other student editors’ and/or staff names and the title and the date/volume of issue in the section designated on the bottom of the entry form.
