the 2010 High School Literary Arts Awards Judges
2010 Judges
- CONFERENCE CHAIRPERSON: Anita Miller Garner, chair of the HSLAA since 1995, has taught fiction writing at the University of Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth University. She is Associate Professor of English at the University of North Alabama. Undeniable Truths, her collection of short fiction, was released in late 2009.
- CREATIVE NONFICTION: Rheta Grimsley Johnson is an award-winning reporter and columnist for King Features Syndicate of New York. Johnson, who travels the country in search of stories, frequently reports from her native South with datelines from Washington, D.C. to Iuka, Mississippi. Her books include Good Grief: The Story of Charles M. Schulz, Poor Man's Provence: Finding Myself in Cajun Louisiana, and the recent Enchanted Evening Barbie and the Second Coming: A Memoir.
- DRAMA: Katherine Breland, currently of Shiyan, Hubei, China, was a Teach for America Fellow, and she is a former HSLAA Portfolio Scholarship winner. She was the inaugural To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Contest Winner and holds a B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Alabama, where she was a participant in the Blount Honors Program in English.
- FICTION: Sena Jeter Naslund is the international best-selling author of Ahab’s Wife, or The Star-Gazer, Four Spirits, Abundance: A Novel of Marie Antoinette, and other works. Naslund founded and directs the Spalding University Brief Residency M.F.A. Writing Program in Louisville, Kentucky, and she is also Writer in Residence at the University of Louisville.
- POETRY: Susie Paul, Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Teaching Professor at Auburn University-Montgomery, currently teaches at Huntingdon College.
- PORTFOLIO SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION: Kirk Curnutt, professor and chair of English at Troy University-Montgomery, is the author of 11 books, including the novels Dixie Noir and Breathing Out the Ghost.
- LITERARY MAGAZINE: Jenny Gropp Hess is editor of The Black Warrior Review, the University of Alabama.
LITERARY ARTS AWARDS BY GENRE
First Place receives $150 and the judge’s book. Second and Third Place receive $75 and the judge’s book. Judge’s Special Recognition winners receive the judge’s book. Certificate winners receive a personalized certificate.
