The
Alabama Writers' Forum promotes and facilitates the practice of literary arts through
its services to writers and the general public. With more than 600 individual and
corporate associates statewide, the Forum represents diverse voices of today's writing
talent. The Forum was founded in appreciation of Alabama's strong literary heritage with a
commitment to it's continuation. |
| The Literary Arts Awards and Scholarships Program is a statewide competition among ninth through twelfth graders. Student works of creative non-fiction, drama, poetry and short fiction are judged by writers of national reputation in those fields. Each first and second place winner receives a cash prize, certificate, and an autographed book by an Alabama author. The judges may also give special recognition awards. To be considered for the scholarship competition, seniors submit a portfolio of works in at least two categories. Winners receive a $500 cash award. |
| Alabama Voices brings prominent Alabama writers, often accompanied by scholars familiar with their work, into libraries and other community venues for readings and discussions. Programs are held in urban and rural settings throughout the state. Alabama Voices continues to grow and benefit participating communities, writers, and the local groups which sponsor the programs. |
| First Draft, a quarterly journal published by the Forum, provides an in depth look at the state's contemporary literary scene. First Draft's articles include profiles of Alabama writers, selections from their work, and essays on literary topics. Each issue has a calendar of events, announcements of competitions (both in-state and beyond) and reviews of books from Alabama authors and presses. |
| Partnerships - Since 1992, the Forum has
partnered with a number of Alabama educational institutions, annual literary events, and
teacher organizations. Some of these include the Alabama Department of Youth Services,
